The Technology Behind PleuraSeal™

The PleuraSeal™ hydrogel technology mechanically adheres to tissue crevices to create true airtight closures that are non-toxic and biocompatible.

Proprietary Hydrogel Technology

PleuraSeal™ is PEG or Polyethylene Glycol, which is non-toxic and biocompatible. A water soluble PEG with reactive linkages is mixed with trilysine (a small molecule amine with reactive linkages) The combination crosslinks almost instantaneously to form an absorbable hydrogel. This crosslinking of PEG molecules and Trilysine molecules creates a 3-dimensional hydrogel structure that gradually hydrolyzes (water gradually degrades the crosslinked bonds in a uniform fashion just like absorbable sutures) and clears the body through the kidneys in 4 to 8 weeks.

  1. Hydrogel Mechanically Adheres to Tissue Crevices

After rapid diffusion of precursors into tissue crevices, hydrogel forms developing a strong mechanical bond with underlying tissue to provide excellent tissue adherence

Blue Color enables visualization of hydrogel and thickness

  2. True Airtight Seal Prevents Leaks

Strong adherence, cohesive strength and flexibility accommodate the natural expansion and contraction of the underlying lung tissue

  3. Absorption And Renal Excretion Occur Gradually

Polymer hydrolyzes over 4-8 weeks liberating PEG molecules, which are cleared by the kidneys
