The Covidien Center for Innovation, (CCI), was established in Istanbul, Turkey in 2014. Covidien currently has CCIs located in Shanghai, China; Mumbai, India, Osong, Korea, Shinju, Japan, Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Istanbul, Turkey. The CCIs form a network of Training and Research Centers that span the Globe providing access to training with state-of-the-art medical technology in Surgery, Intensive Care and Interventional Radiology. Using state-of-the-art simulators clinicians can practice and improve their technical skills in Critical Care and Anesthesia, Minimally Invasive Surgery, and Peripheral and Neurovascular interventions. In addition, the Center maintains 12 fully equipped operating theaters for high fidelity surgery training. The operating tables provide Healthcare Professionals the opportunity to master the latest procedures under the direction of Key Opinion Leaders in their field of specialty. Covidien is committed to providing a robust curriculum of training from basic skills to the most advanced procedures. To better understand the ever changing needs of practicing clinicians, the CCI Istanbul maintains an on-site Research and Development lab, allowing for active dialog between Healthcare Professionals and the Covidien Product Development teams. The Interventional Radiology Lab

CCI Istanbul provides a simulated cath-lab environment for training on peripheral and neuro-vascular interventions. Trainees can practice their skills using a state-of-the-art Mentice™ simulator situated in a realistic radiology suite complete with table and C-arm. Instructors can observe training exercises from a separate control room and review the results of a training session in a comfortable lecture area using audio and visual records of the exercise.

Minimally Invasive Simulation Lab

High performance technical and laparoscopic skills come with repetition and improving technical skills is one of the most important objectives of training at CCI Istanbul. To meet this need, the Center maintains a dedicated laboratory for Skills acquisition. The Minimally Invasive Simulation Lab is designed to meet the needs of Surgeons and Interventional Radiologists who wish to improve their skills in Minimally Invasive Surgery as well as Peripheral and Neuro-vascular procedures, The Simulation Lab allows Trainees to supplement their course experience with additional practice on basic skills using laparoscopic trainers and Flowtek™ models or on specific procedures using computer simulation with the EIDOS™ surgical system.

High Fidelity Operating Room Environment

CCI Istanbul provides twelve fully equipped state-of-the-art operating theaters equipped with insuflation and high resolution monitors for laparoscopic surgery. Each operating theater provides a complete anesthesia delivery and monitoring system allowing for realistic team training for Surgeons, Anestheologists, and Surgical Scrub Techs. Each of the operating theaters supports multiple monitors allowing the course Instructor to demonstrate the target procedure and broadcast the critical steps to each of the tables in the lab. In addition, the lab provides complete audio-visual connections that allow broadcasting from the lab to external monitors or reception of incoming feed from hospital operating theaters or remote auditoriums.

Critical Care Simulation

CCI Istanbul offers a state-of-the-art simulation of a modern hospital Intensive Care Unit. Complete with model patients, the simulator presents the trainee with realistic cases of complex disease pathology allowing for hands-on problem solving under the watchful eye of course instructors. ICU cases are simulated using the realistic SimMan®. The simulator allow for real-time pharmacological interventions with realistic physiologic responses. Pulmonary pathology is accurately modeled using the Test-Chest™ system which allows for high fidelity training on mechanical ventilation in complex patient scenarios. In addition to the realistic Intensive Care Unit simulation, the lab maintains an isolated control room where the instructor can manipulate the patient pathology and record the trainee’s responses. There is also spacious lecture area for didactic instruction and review of the trainee’s performance on the simulated patient problems.

The CCI offers a fully digitized 117 person auditorium complete with 3D and high definition video technology which includes:

  • State-of-the-art, optimized sound system
  • Translation room for multi-lingual trainings
  • Multi-access video calling-capable system
  • Live surgery digital video transport system

In addition, the CCI maintains separate training areas that can be configured into 6 training rooms with sizes between 50 to 77 m2, three of which can be combined to accommodate large classes.
